Abstract This article concerns the way in which philosophers study the epistemology of scientific thought experiments. Starting with a general overview of the main contemporary philosophical accounts, we will first argue that two implicit assumptions are present therein: If you were on the train, you would see the lightning closer to einsteins thought experiments first because the train is moving towards it and it has a shorter distance to travel.

Since these two actions produce the same result, Einstein concluded they must be the same thing and that within a local system it is impossible to differentiate between physical effects from gravity and from acceleration.

Linking this to his previous findings, Einstein concluded that gravity can affect time and space, which led to his theory of relativity.

Since time moves more slowly the closer you get to the speed of light, the twin in the rocket ship would age much more slowly than the twin on earth—the space twin could einsteins thought experiments be preschool age when the twin on earth is preparing to graduate from high school.

This thought experiment shows that time can move at different speeds for long periods of time. Thank you — einsteins thought experiments will call you back instantly Nice to meet you!

This is sketched in the following illustration: In such a situation, if you let go of an einsteins thought experiments, the cabin floor would accelerate towards that object at 9. From your vantage point as an observer standing on the cabin floor, you cannot distinguish between the two situations: Or is the cabin floor accelerating towards them?

A Look Inside Einstein’s Gedankenexperiments

Addendum April 26, What happens with objects that do not fall down in a gravitational field on Earth, but rise up - such as a helium balloon? Einsteins thought experiments this YouTube video showsthis situation obeys the equivalence principle, as well.

Weightlessness poses a similar problem. Imagine you're floating freely inside the elevator.

Around you, other objects are floating, as well, and you feel totally weightless. Does that mean you are far away from all gravitational influences, far away from all stars, planets and other massive bodies, somewhere in deep space?

Again, you cannot be sure. Alternatively, you einsteins thought experiments the elevator could be in the gravitational field of a mass, for instance that of the earth, as long as the elevator was in free fall. In that case you, everything else within the elevator and the elevator itself would all be accelerated at exactly the same rate so that, inside, no influence of gravity could be detected.

Relative to the elevator, all those objects faithfully keep their relative positions or move at a constant speedjust as they would in a gravity-free region einsteins thought experiments space.

You, as the elevator's passenger, would feel weightless - after all, in an ordinary situation here on einsteins thought experiments, you feel your weight as gravity pulls your body down, pressing whatever part of it carries your weight onto the floor.
